World Mental Health Day: A Fostering Perspective

Over the last few years, mental health has become part of everyday conversation, particularly for those in the fostering or social care sector. However, although awareness has increased, we need to shift these conversations into action: creating spaces and adapting services to support people's mental health. This Mental Health Day, it is important to acknowledge the impact fostering and the assessment process can have on foster carers’ wellbeing.

This year's theme is ‘Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change’. In fostering, we are all too familiar with the importance and value of lived experience in terms of shaping services and provisions. Therefore, it remains crucial that foster carers’ voices shape the support they receive, particularly during the assessment process. The assessment journey can often take, on average, 8 months. It may involve complicated procedures, communication delays, and Social Workers being buried in admin, with little opportunity to provide emotional support and guidance to prospective foster carers.

The fostering assessment process is often described as emotionally demanding because it involves exploring foster carers' life experiences and requires a high level of reflection on difficult periods in their lives. Agencies and social workers must support applicants in understanding what topics will come up, so they have time to prepare, ask questions, and better understand why these questions are being asked. This can help them feel safer, be more honest, identify potential triggers, and develop plans to support themselves during the process.

Without the right support, resources and availability, these challenges can easily take their toll on the applicant's mental wellbeing. Poor mental health and high stress levels combined with a lack of clarity may also mean they decide to end their journey towards Fostering, often despite their original passion to do so. We must ensure foster carers are not lost in this way, particularly as 6,000+ new foster families are needed in England every year. As fostering agencies, software providers, and social workers, we must support foster carers on their journeys.

At Fosterli, we want to support foster carers' wellbeing and improve retention rates by making the fostering assessment simpler for everyone involved, reducing stress and anxiety, and giving social workers and agencies more time to check in with prospective foster carers. Social workers should have sufficient time and resources to navigate the assessment process sensitively. Instead of the process being ‘done to them’, the process can become more collaborative and systemic. Fosterli's easy-to-use system gives both foster carers and agencies more time and space to check in with one another, provide clear communication and updates, and complete the assessment process more efficiently; all of which can reduce stress and anxiety for prospective foster carers.

We believe better technology can help create a more supportive fostering journey. To learn how Fosterli can reduce administrative pressures, improve communication, and give foster carers and social workers more time to focus on wellbeing, visit our website and book a demo with our team.

Why Recruitment Targets Fail Without Assessment Capacity

Recruitment targets fail when services attract more Fostering Applicants than their assessment teams can progress, creating delay, disengagement and pressure across the pipeline.
